Orthopaedic Surgery

We perform many types of orthopaedic (bone) surgeries in our clinic. Because we want to ensure that our patients receive the best possible outcome, we occasionally refer them to board-certified orthopaedic veterinary surgeons to perform back surgery and other very complex surgeries.

  • TPLO (Tibial plateau leveling osteotomy)
  • CBLO (Cora based leveling osteotomy)
  • CCWO (Cranial closing wedge osteotomy)
  • Meniscal Surgeries
  • Patellar luxation Correction
  • Joint arthrodesis
  • Hip joint surgeries
  • Bone Fracture repair

TIBIAL PLATEAU LEVELING OSTEOTOMY

TPLO is advanced surgical technique to correct injured/ruptured cranial cruciate ligament in knee joint of dogs. Most orthopedic veterinary surgeons prefer this surgical technique for large active dogs because of consistent outcome in even the most athletic patients. This technique involves making a circular cut around the top of tibial bone and rotating its contact surface (Tibial plateau) until it attains a near level orientation (Appx 90 degree) relative to the attachment of quadricep muscle. This render knee more stable in the absence of CrCL. Cut is stabilized with orthopedic bone plate and screws.

As each dog and cat has different bone geometry, so we utilize advanced computer software for all of our orthopedic procedures to measure geometry of patient’s skeleton. These measurements are precisely and carefully executed by our experienced surgeons into actual surgical procedures which significantly enhance outcome of that procedure.

For TPLO, CBLO & CCWO Surgeries computer software program enable us to know Tibial plateau Angle, size of the orthopedic Plate, size of osteotomy to be made and Rotation to be made to achieve desired final Tibial Plateau Angle even before we do surgery.

CORA BASED LEVELING OSTEOTOMY

CBLO is an advanced surgical technique to correct ruptured/injured cranial cruciate ligament in the knee joint of dogs. This type of surgical technique is more suitable in young growing dogs in which bone growth plates are still open and dog has the potential to grow. In the surgical technique bone cut is made outside of joint which has a few advantages such as:

  1. There is less articular cartilage damage over time

  2. There are excellent short- and long-term functional results.

  3. There is rapid healing compared to other CCL procedures.

  4. Excellent passive stability

  5. Effective and efficient in very small breed dogs and cats.

  6. Facilitate in dogs with excessive Tibial plateau angle (>34 deg)

  7. Facilitate leveling in young dogs with open growth plates

As each dog and cat has different bone geometry, so we utilize advanced computer software for all of our orthopedic procedures to measure geometry of patient’s skeleton. These measurements are precisely and carefully executed by our experienced veterinary surgeons into actual surgical procedures which significantly enhance outcome of that procedure.

For TPLO, CBLO & CCWO Surgeries computer software program enable us to know Tibial plateau Angle, size of the orthopedic Plate, size of osteotomy to be made and Rotation to be made to achieve desired final Tibial Plateau Angle even before we do surgery.

CRANIAL CLOSING WEDGE OSTEOTOMY

Cora based leveling osteotomy augmented with CCWO in case of excessive Tibial plateau angle.

CCWO/CTWO is advanced and specialized surgical procedure that involves adjusting the tibial plateau (the surface at the top of the shin bone) by cutting out a wedge of bone from the front of the shin. The bone above and below the removed wedge is closed and secured with a orthopedic plate and screws resulting in flatter surface.

This surgical procedure may be done as independent procedure or as augmentation with CBLO or TPLO procedures.

MENISCAL SURGERIES

Meniscal injury secondary to Cranial cruciate ligament insufficiency occurs in 40-70% of cases. Most meniscal tears cause persistent lameness if left untreated. Furthermore, better surgical exposure may decrease the risk of iatrogenic damage of cartilage and allow more accurate meniscal treatment. Therefore, meniscal evaluation should be considered in every case. Surgical treatment is based up extent and type of damage to meniscus.

PATELLAR LUXATION CORRECTION

Patellar luxation (dislocation) is a condition where the knee cap rides outside the femoral groove when the knee is flexed. It can be further characterised as medial or lateral, depending on whether the knee cap rides on the inner or on the outer aspect of knee respectively. If this condition is not corrected in timely manner, it causes chronic lameness and painful arthritis in the joint. It can be traumatic and may leads to injury/rupture of cruciate ligaments. Small breeds to dogs are more prone to this defect, correction of this defect is relatively basic orthopedic procedure.

JOINT ARTHRODESIS

What is arthrodesis for dogs? Arthrodesis means the surgical fusion of a joint. In this type of procedure, the joint surfaces are removed, the joint is stabilized in a neutral position with screws and plates, and bone grafts are placed between the bone ends to encourage new bone growth where the joint used to be. Joint arthrodesis is limb salvage procedure when joint function is severely compromised or damaged.

HIP JOINT SURGERIES

Hip joint in dogs and cats consists of two long bone and hip bone. Hip joint surgeries involves correction of fractures, Hip dysplasia, joint luxation and Total Hip replacement. More complex surgeries such as Total Hip replacement and spine surgeries need referral to veterinary speciality hospitals.

BONE FRACTURE REPAIR

Some bone fractures that occur in dogs and cats can be treated via simple bone realignment and containment within a cast or splints, whereas more complex or dislocated bone fractures need surgical correction. For fracture repair our approach is to cause no damage to associated structure to the fracture and try to repair fracture with minimum skin incision length this specialised and advanced technique is called Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO). This specialised technique preserve blood supply to the bone, decreases infection risks and promote healing. Our In-house Fluoroscopy modality is priceless asset in this type of surgical procedure.
